Carolyn Griffiths FREng, CEng, FIMechE.Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) UK

    For most of her career Carolyn has worked in the rail industry. She has worked in the UK and overseas in roles ranging from the shop floor to Senior Vice President of a multinational. Her most recent full time role was in founding and leading the UK’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch reporting to the Secretary of State for Transport. Carolyn is on the Board of Irish Rail and, until recently, was a Board member for AES Engineering Ltd, Sheffield; her other connection with Sheffield being that she was Engineering Director during the construction and early operation of South Yorkshire Supertram.

    Carolyn is a former President and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and current member of its Council, a Board member and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a former Governor of Imperial College London and a recent Board member of the Engineering Council. She chairs the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety’s Rail Group.

    Carolyn was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Cranfield University for her services to the rail industry and this year has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Sheffield Hallam University .
